Remodeling/Design Trends You Might Want to Skip
Whether you’re updating your Los Angeles home in preparation for selling, listing the features you want in a new home, or planning the remodel of a home you’ve just purchased, these popular design trends are some you might want to avoid.
Dark Hardwood Floors. They’re gorgeous, no doubt about it. They also show every speck of dust, every footprint, and every scratch from a pet’s claws or a rock stuck in the treads of a shoe.
Unless you want to spend hours cleaning and polishing, choose a lighter color – one that won’t reveal the fact that you haven’t dusted and polished within the last half hour.
Marble countertops. Yes – they are beautiful. They stay that way until the first time you spill the wine or the grape juice. Marble is porous, so stains don’t wash off – they sink in. In addition, marble scratches easily and the polished finish wears off quickly, so you end up with dull, etched areas on the counter. If you want the look, consider choosing quartz, which is non-porous and doesn’t scratch.
Rain showerheads. This is the latest thing in upscale showers, but if you go for it, do yourself a favor and also install a standard showerhead – one that can be operated without turning on the overhead rain.
Not everyone wants wet hair when they’re hurrying to get ready for work – or rushing in to grab a quick shower before going out for the evening.
Doing away with the bathtub. If you never have friends or relatives visiting with young children, this might suit you fine, but if you’re thinking of resale value, keep the tub.
When remodeling for resale, it’s also a good idea to shy away from design trends and trendy colors, with the exception of the year’s most popular neutrals. Sometimes that’s an off-white. Other times it’s pale shades of beige. Most recently it’s been shades of grey.
